Let the games begin! Special Olympics Australia are putting in a bid for Perth to host the 2027 World Games – and your support can help make it happen.

Special Olympics is a vital organisation that supports over 6 million athletes with intellectual disabilities around the world, providing opportunities to get involved with community sports, lifestyle programs, plus a games pathway for athletes to compete in State, National and World Games.

The World Games are a huge event – twice the size of the Paralympics, they will attract 8,000 athletes from more than 170 nations, along with nearly 20,000 international visitors, nearly 8,000 interstate visitors and a predicted half a million spectators.

Held every four years, Perth would be the first time the Games have been held in the southern hemisphere! Importantly, the games would require no infrastructure spend thanks to Perth’s existing facilities, including Optus Stadium.

And while the event has an economic return of $212 million, the positive impact it has on athletes is unquantifiable – creating a sense of community and confidence, as well as shining a light on their achievements to the community at large.

The Chair of the World Games 2027 Bid Committee, WA-based Tanya Brown said in a statement: “It is fitting for such a sport loving nation that, through the catalyst of sport, we can achieve systemic change for our nation and change views, change lives, change our nation and change the world.”

There are heaps of ways you can get involved to show your support – from volunteering, joining as a healthcare professional, cheering on as a spectator or getting your workplace involved as a partner or with a donation.
